ROME - Pope Francis was formally installed Tuesday morning at the Vatican. A crowd of hundreds of thousands gathered to watch the mass.

The pope began this day, as he has his papacy, embracing the faithful. Many came to his inaugural mass in St. Peter's square, and among them were kings, presidents and dignitaries from around the world. The US delegation led by Vice President Joe Biden. But it was his connection with the crowd that seemed to be the most powerful, including this poignant moment when he stopped to offer a special blessing.

Many hope this is the beginning of sweeping changes to the Vatican, which has been riddled with in fighting and scandal.
