Authorities in Racine Co. search for suspects who followed, attacked teenagers
MOUNT PLEASANT - Just by taking one look at the damage to this car, it's amazing to think the group of teens inside survived. Smashed windows and dents are the results of a late-night chase and assault on a group of boys.
"Whenever I touch or anything, it hurts really bad," said Joey.
The 17-year-old has a four-inch gash in his head. He's now back home from the hospital, where doctors told him he's lucky to be alive.
"If it was like a hair deeper, I could have been dead or a vegetable," he said.
The wound came from a baseball bat. Joey was beaten within an inch of his life. Early Sunday morning, the teen was dropping off a friend in Mount Pleasant's Lake Park neighborhood when some young men Joey knows saw him, and jumped into their cars.
"I didn't think nothing of it at the time, and then out of nowhere, they started creeping up on me really fast,” he said. “Then I started driving fast."
Joey said he tried to get away, but ended up driving down a dead end street. He made another escape attempt, but it was too late.
"They all hopped out of their cars,” he said. “There's at least 15 to 20 people, and they all had bats, crowbars, and all that."
The teen's car documents the attack. Holes, dents, dings, and broken glass. Joey doesn't remember what happened after that, but a neighbor, Rachel does. She said the men were saying they wanted to kill him.
She watched helplessly from her home as the men attacked Joey and his three friends.
"I would say [the suspects] were 20 years old or over," she said.
"It appears something precipitated this incident," police said.
Police are looking for one of the trucks from the scene. Joey said these people slashed his tires weeks before, and now he's hoping the nightmare is over.
"I hope that the police get these people, and they get what they dIserve," he said.
Joey and his friends are resting at home, and authorities are working on this case. If you have any information that can help them, police are asking for your help.
At last check, authorities have made no arrests in the case.
