Racine Police say an 87-year-old driver told them he didn't realize he'd hit a Racine Police officer this morning. The driver hit the officer, who was outside his squad car to pick up some traffic cones Wednesday morning in the 2500 block of Northwestern Avenue.
According to police, the officer was walking in front of his squad when the elderly driver drifted into his lane, hitting the officer with his passenger side mirror. The force of the impact spun the officer around and knocked him to the ground.
The officer was able to get up and give a general description of the car that hit him. A witness was able to get a license plate number and other officers located the car and stopped it near Osborne and Graceland.
Police are asking the state to retest the 87-year-old driver. Investigators are still considering issuing citations.
The officer has some bumps and bruises, but is expected to be okay.
