Derek Williams' family reacts to inquest verdict
MILWAUKEE - A jury has recommended charges after an inquest in the Derek Williams death. The panel of six members found that three police officers failed to render aid to Williams as he died in the backseat of a squad car.
A special prosecutor will now decide whether the jury's recommendation warrants official charges against the officers.
As soon as the doors from the courtroom swung open, there were visible smiles on the faces of derek williams family.
After the verdict, the family was seen walking down the hallway chanting. William's great aunt became very emotional, trying to hold back tears as she talked about the decision of the six jurors.
“I'd like to thank God, first of all for bring is together today as a family,” said Maeleen Jordan, “to get what we've been fighting for, marching for Derek, begging for and it was justice.”
Before the verdict was announced there were at least twenty police officers lining the hallway outside the courtroom.
