Police involved in standoff with man with sword
MILWAUKEE - A 35-year-old Milwaukee man is in police custody this afternoon after chasing a group of people with a sword and then locking himself inside his apartment on Milwaukee's north side.
According to Sergeant Stanmeyer with Milwaukee Police, the suspect was "shouting incoherently and armed with a sword," chased a group of people who were walking to their apartment in the 1200 block of E. Singer Circle just before 12:30 p.m. Monday. The victims, who were not injured, were able to run to their car, drive away, and call police.
"Responding officers discovered that the suspect had locked himself in his apartment. and he refused the officers commands to come out," said Stanmeyer. "Officers with the Tactical Enforcement Unit responded, and after over an hour of attempting to negotiate the suspect out of the apartment a chemical agent was deployed into the residence. The suspect came out without incident."
The man will be taken to the Milwaukee County Mental Health Complex for evaluation and the case will be referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office for possible charges.
