Today's TMJ4 is again teaming up with local veterans groups to help our heroes find jobs.
The job fair at the War Memorial Center that wrapped up today.
More than 60 employers showed up to the Hiring Our Heroes job fair. Some are looking to hire veterans even as early as today.
John Killeen spent 14 years in the US Navy. Now he iss looking for a job.
“I was a maintenance supervisor for awhile then i got laid off,” Killeen said.
This Racine man has been in and out of work for the last three years.
“I’ve got two kids so it’s kind of tough right now with the econom,” he said. “Hopefully I can hook someone in and get some employment.”
Killeen is at the job fair with more than 200 veterans, active military members, guard and reserve members and their spouses.
"We like to hire veterans because they have the dedication to the company,” said Nicole Baumgart with Schneider National.
Schneider National is looking to hire about 50 truck drivers in the next couple of months.
“I am defintely hoping [we will find some qualified applicants],” said Baumgart. “The gentleman who was just here actually has a CDL and he's going to put in an application and we'll interview him this week.”
The Wisconsin Office of Veterans Services said that, on average, 30 percent of veterans will get hired.
"Employers are eager to hire veterans,” said Gary Meyer with Veterans Services. “They heard about what they offer.”
This includes a great attitude, dedication and flexibility. Now Killeen is confident this will be the fair that will land him a permanent job.
"Hopefully get a bite,” he said.
Another job fair will be held at the Milwaukee County War Memorial center on March 7.
