Toddler found alone in Racine
RACINE - Racine Police say a toddler may have left his home and wandered outside in the cold Monday morning because the door to his home was unlocked.
The Sunset Terrace Apartments manager did not want to go on camera with TODAY'S TMJ4, but she told Nick Montes that someone found the toddler early this morning.
She says the family has lived there for a bout a year and a half, then moved out last Friday.
Neighbors were shocked that the boy came back.
Someone discovered the child wandering outside an apartment complex on Byrd Avenue in Racine at about 4:00 a.m.
The apartment is about a block from their old place.
"He was sleeping. Everyone in the home was sleeping," explained Sgt. Jessie Metoyer of the Racine Police Department.
"Either the door was accidentally unlocked, or he was able to unlock it."
According to authorities, the boy is two or three years old.
That child was taken to Wheaton Franciscan Hospital. Police said the child should be OK.
Authorities say the boy may have left a home on his or her own.
Police talked to the mother at the hospital.
"It doesn't look like (the mother was negligent)," said Metoyer. "It looks like a simple accident."
