911 Center Facing Questions in Student Death

The Dane County 911 call center is facing questions about its practices after a UW-Madison student's call was mishandled, possibly resulting in her death.

County Supervisor Eileen Bruskewitz said a 2004 audit warned about problems in the system that mishandled the call of Brittany Zimmerman, a student UW-Madison who was found dead in April shortly after making a 911 call for help.

"The suggestions, the real directives of this report were not implemented because the county was busy doing something else," she said.

Officials for the center said they've committed $30 million to improvements to the center, including training new officers and dispatchers.

The center also said the cell phone tracing technology was up to date and staffing was normal the day of Zimmerman's call.
