Milwaukee daycare worker charged after failing to drop off child asleep in the back of his van
MILWAUKEE - A Milwaukee daycare worker is being charged with one count of Child Left Unattended in Child Care Vehicle after allegedly leaving a seven-year-old child in a daycare van for "several hours" on Jan. 11, 2013.
The man, Gary Petty, was the driver of the van who picked up the child from school and was supposed to drop him off at daycare, along with other children.
"However, after dropping off all the other children on the van, the van was parked outside of Petty’s apartment building, with [the child] still inside, asleep," said the Milwaukee County Circuit Court. "[The child's mother] states that she called the daycare, as she does every time her children are there, on her break at 5:00 p.m. on 1/11/13, and was told that [the child] was downstairs. She later
learned that he was not at the daycare facility at all at that time, as he should have been."
When she called back at 9:00 p.m., the child's teacher said the child was not at the daycare, and that he was never dropped off that day.
"[The mother] frantically called the van driver, Petty, and was finally able to reach him, at which time Petty told her that he had [the child] with him, and they were on the way to the daycare at that time."
Petty realized the child was in the van asleep only after receiving the phone call.
"Petty said that although he has an assistant who helps him get the children off the van, it is ultimately his responsibility for making sure the children are not left on the bus," said the court.
