Probation for teen involved in Fond du Lac County arrow case
FOND DU LAC, Wis. (AP) -- The Campbellsport teen accused of shooting an arrow that struck a 7-year-old girl in the back will not get prison time.
Seventeen-year-old Casey H. Bennett is will spend the next three years on probation.
He was charged with a felony count of second-degree reckless injury and a misdemeanor count of resisting an officer.
Bennett told authorities he was shooting at squirrels in May when a stray arrow hit 7-year-old Aryanna Schneeberg in the back.
He also said he panicked when he hit the girl with the arrow.
Prosecutors say the teen initially denied shooting the arrow, and that he didn't come forward because he was scared.
Schneeberg was playing outside her Campbellsport home. Doctors said she was lucky to be alive after the arrow sliced through her spleen, stomach, diaphragm and lung before stopping at her liver.
Conditions of the probation include writing an apology to Schneeberg and her family, an apology to the Sheriff's Department and competion of 300 hours of community service.
