Racine mom jailed for child abuse
RACINE - Inside her sister's apartment in Racine, officials say Myrna Staten lost her patience.
The mother of three is charged with felony child abuse for burning her son's feet.
Staten's sister, Barbara, talked to TODAY'S TMJ4's Keller Russell about the charges.
"She's not a bad mother at all. That's not something that she would do."
Staten brought her son to the ER at Wheaton Franciscan All Saint's Hospital. According the court documents, Staten changed her story two times when explaining to medical staff about how her son got the burns. She claims he tipped over a boiling bucket of water.
Doctors told authorities the toddler's burns were consistent with someone dunked in hot water.
"She loved those kids," Barbara says. "That's her heart. That's her life. If anything ever happened to them, she would be heart broken."
Staten later admitted she stuck her sons's legs in hot water as punishment after he soiled himself. When he screamed in pain, she claims she immediately took him out of the bucket. Barbara maintains Myrna didn't intend to hurt her son.
"I love my kids," Barbara says. "I wouldn't have nothing like that around my kids, so for anybody to feel like she abused her kids, that never happened."
Myrna's other kids have been placed in a foster home while she remains in jail.
