MILWAUKEE -  Airfares at General Mitchell International are $57 less than the national average, according to a study by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The average round trip ticket from Mitchell International Airport costs $328.

Airport spokesman Harold Mester credited the airlines for the low fares.

"(The low fares) are because of the competition of the carriers here in Milwaukee," Mester said.  "They are competing with each other to attract travelers from Wisconsin and northern Illinois."

Average fares at O'Hare Airport in Chicago are $65 more than at Mitchell.

"We are fortunate that two of the nation's strongest airlines, Southwest and Delta, are increasing their presence at Mitchell," Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele said in a statement.

The low airfaires do not apply to business class, so the casual traveler mainly benefits.

Additionally, fewer non-stop flights originate from Mitchell than in previous years.
