A commemorative issue of the new Vince Lombardi stamp was unveiled Tuesday, August 5, next to Lambeau Field by the U.S. Postal Service during a brief ceremony featureing comments from several persons including from left to right Ray Nitchke, Packer player from 1958-1972; William Brown, Vice President, Area Operations, Midwest Area for the U.S. Postal Service; Packer President Bob Harlan; and Jim Irwin, Radio boice of the Green Bay Packers. MILWAUKEE - Once again, Newsradio 620 WTMJ is honored to bring you another classic rebroadcast of some of the greatest games in Packers history.
This year, it's with special poignancy as we remember Jim Irwin, who passed early this year.
Our tribute includes a re-broadcast of Jim and Max McGee's call of the 1993 NFC Wildcard Game between the Green Bay Packers and the Detroit Lions.
At 9:00 a.m., Dennis Krause will host a special retrospective on Irwin's 30 years with 620WTMJ and TODAY'S TMJ4.
Dennis will offer great memories from Jim's broadcast colleagues including:
- Ted Moore, Jim's first broadcast partner with the Packers Radio Network in 1969
- Jon McGlocklin, Jim's longtime color voice with the Bucks Radio Network
- Brian Manthey, who worked with Jim on Wisconsin Badgers broadcasts and then succeeded him as Voice of the Badgers
- Larry McCarren, who joined Jim and Max for the final four seasons of their tenure on the Packers Radio Netork
- Wayne Larrivee, who followed Jim and now serves in his 14th year as Voice of the Packers
You can also hear those interviews in our online coverage later Thanksgiving morning.
Then, after Dennis' 75-minute special, we'll bring you the main course - one of Jim's classic broadcasts, against a team that traditionally plays on Thanksgiving Day, the Detroit Lions.
You'll hear the 1993 NFC Wildcard Game, Jim's first non-strike playoff game as voice of the Packers, and the first for the franchise since 1972.
The Packers had produced their second straight 9-7 season, but six days beforehand, they fell to the Lions in the very same Silverdome.
On January 8, 1994, the Packers looked for revenge, redemption, and the team's first non-strike playoff victory since Super Bowl II - a game Irwin covered as a TV reporter in Green Bay.
Throughout our Thanksgiving Day re-broadcast, we'll sprinkle in dozens of Jim's best, most famous, and most memorable calls as voice of the Packers, Badgers and Bucks.
You'll hear Jim with color commentators like McGee, McCarren, Lionel Aldridge, Ron Vanderkelen and sometimes a gleefully screaming "Johnny Mac."
It's all part of our "Tribute to Jim."
