RACINE- Police are investigating the death of an elderly man in Racine.

A relative called 9-1-1 after she found 84-year-old Donald Thompson dead inside his home Thursday afternoon. Thompson's niece told neighbors she went to check on her elderly uncle after he failed to answer multiple phone calls.

"They wanted to make sure there was no foul play, you know. Because of how he was positioned on the floor and he had a big gash on his head.  That's what she told me," explained neighbor Bryan Swiggett who spoke with Thompson's niece.

Police searched the home until early in the morning hours with the help of the Major Crime Unit. Neighbors woke to squads outside the home again for much of Friday.

"Somebody was killed. I mean nobody does that for a (natural) death," said Swiggett's wife, Kelly.

The couple says Thompson lived in the neighborhood for at least 40 years. All who knew him are shocked, wondering why anyone would want to harm him.

Police wouldn't answer questions about the nature of Thompson's death or injuries.

When asked if the public should be concerned about their safety, Sgt. Martin Pavilonis said the department would "notify residents through a press release or social media if necessary and at this point they didn't believe it to be so."

Neighbors tell TODAY'S TMJ4 Thompson's house had been broken into about a month ago while he was hospitalized. We were unable to confirm that with police.
