MILWAUKEE - Four years and $300 million later, the Mitchell Interchange is finally open.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony for its opening was planned for Friday afternoon.
Crews completed the interchange ahead of schedule and on budget.
The challenges brought by closed lanes and ramps have been a headache for drivers, but there's one new final challenge - learning the new ways to get around.
Here are some things to remember:
- Drivers heading south on I-43/94 from downtown Milwaukee who plan to exit on Layton Avenue, the Airport Spur or College Avenue will have a separate exit to take before the Mitchell Interchange.
- Drivers going east on I-43/894 who plan to drive downtown need to stay on the right of that freeway. The ramp headed downtown now exits on the right, when in the past, it was located on the left.
The project has been four years in the making, reconstructing a new and modern interchange with three new tunnels, 51 bridges and 17 noise walls.
