Missing child found, mother injured after crash closing I-94 westbound
MILWAUKEE - Authorities say a missing child has been found after a rollover crash Wednesday morning that led to the closure of I-94 westbound.
The child was found with a grandmother.
The crash happened near 25th Street at about 5:25 a.m. The freeway re-opened at about 6:50 a.m.
Sheriff's spokeswoman Fran McLaughlin said a Sheriff's deputy put the fire out on scene.
The child's mother initially said that the child was traveling with her and she didn't know where the child was, so they had to conduct a search.
"It's dark. They had to err on the side of caution and close the freeway in the event that there was a child in the area," McLaughlin told Newsradio 620 WTMJ's Jon Byman.
"The mother was confused after the crash. She thought that her child was still with her," she later told 620WTMJ's Jay Sorgi.
"Everyone would understand the need to close down the freeway. If that was your child, you would certainly want them to do everything they could to ensure the safety of the child."
McLaughlin said the mother went to Froedtert Hospital. She should survive her injuries.
Drivers have been advised to enter I-94 westbound at 35th Street.
