MILWAUKEE- A new poll out Wednesday shows a tight race for Wisconsin's U.S. Senate seat.

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Tommy Thompson tells TODAY'S TMJ4 he still thinks this is a close race.  He stopped by the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce to chat with old friends who were singing his praises.  But he's taken a lot of shots in this nasty, hard fought U.S. Senate race against Democrat Tammy Baldwin.

TODAY'S TMJ4's Charles Benson: "Do you think you underestimated her abilities?"
Tommy Thompson: "No, I never underestimate any opponent, you know me Charles."

Thompson has won six state wide races including an unprecedented four terms as governor.  But his campaign finds itself in the unusual position of being out raised almost two to one by Democratic Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin.

TODAY'S TMJ4's Charles Benson: "Is the race harder this time?"
Tommy Thompson: "It's more vicious.  Tammy Baldwin has had no positive ads."

In fact, both sides have been running negative ads, lots of them, largely funded by outside groups trying to influence the race.  The estimated price tag so far is $40 million to $50 million or about $16 per voter.

"It's absurd you know for a job that pays $175,000," says Thompson.

But it's a job he wants and he says his record will help him win it.

"(I) would be the best senator you would ever see and expect. I know how to get things done."
