TOWN OF GENESSEE - Five people have been injured in a five-vehicle series of crashes in Waukesha County where a car caught fire.

Flight for Life has taken one person to Froedtert Hospital with what were described as serious injuries.  Four other people were also injured, with one person said to have serious injuries.

The crashes happened about 6:00 a.m. on Highway 59 near Genesee Road.

In the first crash, three vehicles collided, causing an SUV to erupt into flames.

"Obviously, the impact was significant enough to cause a vehicle to start fire, which doesn't happen that often," said Waukesha County Sheriff's Detective Steve Pederson.

Moments after that crash, another collision happened in the same area.

"That doesn't appear to be related to the first accident other than it may have occurred by slowing traffic."

Authorities had to close Highway 59 between Highway 83 and Hillside so Flight for Life could assist on the scene.

Crews were reconstructing the scene to try and determine what is to blame.

"Road conditions appeared to have been OK this morning," explained Pederson.

"It doesn't appear visibility was diminished, or roads were wet."
