Port of Milwaukee officials taking precautions along Lake Michigan
MILWAUKEE- Port of Milwaukee officials are taking steps to avoid damage to boats and docks following reports of high waves and strong wind gusts along Lake Michigan.
The National Weather Service is advising that dangerous high waves of 14 to 18 feet are anticipated along the Lake Michigan shoreline beginning Monday night and continuing through Tuesday night. The National Weather Service also says windy conditions with strong gusts are also expected.
Milwaukee Department of City Development spokesman Jeff Fleming says there is concern that boats could hit rocks or do damage to other boats because of the waves.
"Boats have been moved to the innermost, most protected part of the harbor," says Fleming. "When a boat is tied up to a dock and heavy waves hit, there is a lot of concern about lines breaking."
Fleming says waves in Lake Michigan reaching heights of 18 feet is quite rare, so they are taking every precaution.
