MILWAUKEE- New details about the sad situation that led to the death of a five-year-old boy.
Prosecutors say a Milwaukee man beat his girlfriend and killed her little boy.
When Cheri Nowak heard noises from the upstairs apartment last Thursday -- she had no idea it was the sound of a five-year-old boy being beaten to death.
"I didn't hear nobody screaming or hollering or crying please stop or anything like that..."
That boy's mother -- 20-year-old Alyssa Banda -- is now charged with child neglect. Her boyfriend -- 23-year-old Marcos Colin -- charged with neglect and physical abuse of a child.
"Friday, they were running out of a house around 12:30 and I don't know what they were running for. Obviously, I do know now they were rushing him to the hospital," says Nowak.
Doctors at St. Francis Hospital found at least 20 bruises on the boy -- including a baseball size lump on his head.
As her son lay dying, Banda told detectives the boy and Colin "were wrestling." And he was "toughening him up" by punching the boy.
Court records show Colin should not have been anywhere near Banda or her son. In May -- he was hit with three counts of domestic abuse and ordered to have no contact with Banda.
With that history -- Cheri Nowak doesn't understand why she still let him come around.
"I can't see how anybody could do that to a child. How she could let it go on?"
The boy died from his injuries Monday, according to the criminal complaint.
