BROWN DEER - Neighbors in Brown Deer are relieved after a tense situation unfolded there around the gunman's house Sunday afternoon.

Swat teams raced through the neighborhood as a bomb squad prepared to enter the house near 66th and Glenbrook.

Officers armed with rifles walked the streets as they searched for Radcliffe Haughton, the gunman in the Brookfield salon shooting.

"No, I did not come outside," neighbor Leslie Young says. "I saw all the weapons and I stayed inside."

Young knew instantly the scene unfolding was a dangerous one.

"When I see that kind of action outside, I stay in the home," Young says.

A view from above showed armed officers gaining entry from every possible angle, including the garage, front door and even the living room window.

"Upon our arrival to the house, we obtained information that there might be explosive devices in the residence," Brown Deer Chief Steven Rinzell says.

Police then roped off and advised neighbors of the possible danger.

"Orignally, the tape line was around the house," Neighbor Juan Fernandez says. "But, as it progressed they kept moving the tape line to a much larger area."

Fernandez's daughter alerted him to the situation.

"The kids were still playing outside and they came inside," Fernandez says. "Someone told them to come inside because there was a bad guy outside."

The suspect and his family lived in the Brown Deer house for several years. Brown Deer Police have responded to the house many times, often for domestic violence. Chief Rinzell says they've arrested Haughton recently.

"I do know we've had contact with him in the past," Chief Rinzell says. "I believe we did make a disorderly conduct domestic violence arrest."

But, the suspect decided to escalate his actions, shooting seven before taking his own life.

"He's gotta live somewhere," Fernandez says.

"That he lived a block away, I don't like it but I'm not going to move somewhere else. You don't know who lives around you wherever you are."
