Milwaukee's teen birth rate falls for fifth straight year
MILWAUKEE - The City of Milwaukee says that its birth rate for 15 to 17-year-old girls has dropped to 33.4 births for every 1,000 girls in that age group in 2011.
The rate dropped from 35.8 births per 1,000 girls who were 15 to 17 years old at the time in 2010.
Since 2006, the teenage birth rate has dropped about 36 percent in Milwaukee.
"We are making incredible progress in reducing the teen birth rate," said Mayor Tom Barrett in a statement.
"We should be proud of our accomplishments and what this success means for the future of our young people and for our community as a whole."
The city also says its rate has declined faster than the national average, and it cites a combination of public, business and faith-based approaches to battling teen pregnancy.
