Bipartisan group for debt cuts opens Wisconsin chapter
MADISON- A national nonpartisan group that wants lawmakers to get serious about cutting the national debt has opened its Wisconsin chapter.
The Campaign to Fix the Debt said Thursday its co-chairs include former U.S. Rep. Scott Klug, a Republican, and former Gov. Tony Earl, a Democrat.
Klug calls the $16 trillion debt the most urgent issue facing the country. He says there's a "moral obligation" to solve the problem rather than pass it on to future generations.
Other members heading the group include former Lt. Gov. Margaret Farrow, Racine Mayor John Dickert and Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele.
The budget deficit is the shortfall created when the government spends more in a given year than it collects. It's on track to top $1 trillion for the fourth straight year.
