Former Greenfield alderman wants sidewalks along Loomis Road following fatal accident

GREENFIELD- We now know the name of the man who was killed while walking along Loomis Road in Greenfield.
54-year-old David Bulge was walking along the curb on Loomis Road, because there are no sidewalks near S. 45th Street and W. Loomis Road.
A former alderman argues if there was a sidewalk along that stretch of Loomis Road, we wouldn't be talking about a death.
Former Greenfield Alderman Richard Eaton was saddened when he heard a man died while walking along that busy stretch of Loomis Road Monday afternoon.
"Safety is supposed to be the number one issue," says former Alderman Eaton. "Sidewalks are a safety issue."
David Bulge was walking on the road, facing traffic, when a Cadillac Escalade drifted close to the curb and hit Bulge.
"When I saw someone was killed on a main road like this, you just get sick to your stomach," says Eaton. "You wonder what is holding people up."
Eaton argued ten years ago that sidewalks should be put in along all busy roads in Greenfield. He was recalled and lost his seat, and claims neighbors didn't want to pay for, or shovel the sidewalks.
"I wish that ten years ago when I said someone is going to get run over and killed, that I was wrong," says Eaton.
But Greenfield police agree there's a chance Bulge may still be alive if there was a sidewalk.
"In this situation, I think had he been walking on a sidewalk or grass, yes," says Greenfield Police Captain Mike Brunner. "I think we could say it would have made a difference."
Greenfield Mayor Michael Neitzke says the state is reconstructing Loomis Road in a few years, and is planning on adding sidewalks to the road then.
