TOWN OF YORKVILLE- The Racine County District Attorney's office has charged a 46-year-old man from Sturtevant for the murder of a 54-year-old man in the Town of Yorkville last month.

Scott D. Mertins Sr. is facing four felonies for allegedly killing Robert G. Greene at a pole barn in the 16000 block of County Highway A last month.

The Mount Pleasant Patch reports that Mertins used to work at that pole barn, and apparently went there to retrieve items after 2 a.m. on Aug. 26.  Mertins told authorities that Greene and another person were sleeping in the pole barn when he arrived.  Mertins said he shot Greene after he was startled by two people sleeping there.

Prosecutors claim that Mertins tried robbing the barn, then stole the car of a person that allegedly witnessed the shooting.

Authorities arrested Mertins in Missouri on an unrelated Wisconsin Department of Corrections warrant.

According to a news release, the Racine County Sheriff's Office traveled over 2,000 miles through five states pursuing leads in the case.

If convicted on all charges in this case -- Mertins faces up to 91 years in prison and/or up to $85,000 in fines.
