St. Croix County deputies return fire, kill man
BALDWIN, Wis. (AP) -- St. Croix County authorities say sheriff's deputies shot and killed a man who fired shots at them during an incident at his home near Baldwin in western Wisconsin.
Deputies were called to Patrick McDonnell's house in Eau Galle Township around 7:30 p.m. Saturday on a report he was drunk, suicidal and armed.
Just after 9:00 p.m., Sheriff John Shilts says, the man exited carrying a rifle and two handguns. He fired at least two shots at the deputies at the end of his driveway, striking a marked squad car. Officials say the three deputies fired back, killing McDonnell.
The three deputies were unhurt and have been placed on standard administrative leave as authorities investigate.
Shilts says it's unclear what started the incident but a divorce might have been pending.
