Racine mother describes rental home as house of horrors
RACINE- A local mother says her rental home is filthy and infested, and claims her landlord is trying to make her leave.
Cheryl Grammer says she's desperate. She claims the conditions in her home are putting her health and her kids health at risk, and her landlord isn't doing anything about it.
"I know what's right and I know what's wrong and this is wrong and I need your help," pleaded Grammer to TODAY'S TMJ4.
Grammer moved into her Racine home in February, and says it's been problem after problem ever since.
"I've dealt with mice, rodents, my kids have bite marks all over them."
Grammer says her landlord, Alvis Davis, isn't doing enough to fix the problem.
"It got to the point where I had to withhold the rent because he was not fixing anything."
Court documents show Davis tried to evict her, but a judge agreed with Grammer, saying she had good cause to withhold the rent based on the conditions.
Her furniture is filled with bugs. Her kids are sleeping on air mattresses and they walk on ripped carpet.
TODAY'S TMJ4 wanted to give Davis a chance to tell his side. Nobody returned the message.
So TODAY'S TMJ4 went to Davis' clothing store. But a man inside said he wasn't around and didn't know how to get in touch with him.
Next, TODAY'S TMJ4 went to Davis' house. There were cars in the driveway and the lights were on inside, but nobody came to the door.
"He will not respond, I've got proof of all of that. It just doesn't seem like he cares," claims Grammer.
Cheryl says she'd move out, but the eviction keeps popping up on her record. She says she doesn't want money, she just wants the problems fixed.
