Waukesha bar owner insists man charged $25,000 for tip accidentally
WAUKESHA- A man ended up paying a $25,000 tip at a local club. Problem is, he didn't mean to be that generous.
A customer of Club Velvet woke up with a major headache. And, it wasn't from a hangover.
Instead, a few drinks turned into a $25,000 tip on his tab -- without him knowing.
"When they (Waukesha police) contacted me, I immediately came to investigate," said bar owner Cyndi Thomas.
Cyndi Thomas told TODAY'S TMJ4 she was shocked to get the phone call about the tip.
"It was human error. Someone keyed in, in the tip line an invoice number instead of the tip amount," explained Thomas.
It's a mistake that cost a 30-year-old man from Racine, big money.
The customer got the bad news when he stopped at a McDonald's the next day for lunch and his debit card was denied.
A call to his bank revealed the massive tip charge.
Cyndi Thomas showed TODAY'S TMJ4 the paperwork, and explained how she believes the error happened. She insists it wasn't intentional.
"No one walked out with that kind of money, it's never even reached our end," said Thomas.
And she wants customers to know she's making changes so it doesn't happen again.
"Now all tips are going to be keyed in immediately at the time of transaction so there's less chance of any type of error," said Thomas.
Cyndi's working with the bank to get the money returned to the customer's account -- and to have the fees dropped.
TODAY'S TMJ4 made multiple attempts to reach the customer for comment but were unable to Tuesday evening.
