Marquette mourning a hero, Neil Armstrong dies at age 82
MILWAUKEE - Condolences are being offered by the staff at Marquette University upon learning of the death of Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon.
A news release sent out by the school says, "Marquette was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Neil Armstrong earlier today. In 1969, Marquette honored Armstrong and the heroic crew of Apollo 11 with the first Pere Marquette Discovery Award, the highest honor bestowed by the university. "
Marquette has posted photos online of the crew being honored here in Milwaukee.
The Pere Marquette Discovery Award has only been given out on five occasions.
Other recipients of the award include Rev. Karl Rahner, 1979; Mother Teresa of Calcutta, 1981; the Most Rev. Desmond Mpilo Tutu, 2003; and the members of The Little Rock Nine, 2010.
