Wisconsin revenue officials warn of RYO crackdown
MADISON- Wisconsin tax officials say they've resumed their crackdown on roll-your-own tobacco machines.
The Department of Revenue started enforcing regulations last year that require roll-your-own machine owners to have manufacturing and distribution permits, subjecting them to higher taxes.
A Wausau tobacco store owner sued, arguing roll-your-own customers do the manufacturing.
A Madison judge issued an injunction in February but lifted it last month after President Barack Obama signed federal legislation that declared roll-your-own machine owners manufacturers.
DOR officials say they will again check with machine operators to see if they either have the permits and tax stamps on cigarette packages leaving their stores or have removed the machines.
