MILWAUKEE - The Milwaukee Fire Department says that a man has been taken to St. Mary's Hospital with burns after a fire Tuesday morning in his downtown Milwaukee apartment.

The fire happened at about 5:15 a.m. in a second-floor unit of a three-story apartment building on the corner of North Van Buren and East Knapp Street.

A fire department official told Newsradio 620 WTMJ's Jay Sorgi that there was no initial word on the injured man's condition.

The Red Cross was assisting 50 people who were evacuated from the building.

Three apartments were damaged, including two on the victim's floor and one below which took on water damage.

Authorities say there was about $31,000 in damage.

Both Milwaukee Fire and Police arson investigators were on scene to find the cause, though there was no initial information to indicate that arson was a possible cause of the fire.
