23 private wells now contaminated with gasoline in Town of Jackson

TOWN OF JACKSON- Two additional private wells have been contaminated with gasoline in the Town of Jackson, according to a news release Friday evening from the West Shore Pipe Line company.
The company said 243 private wells have been tested and elements of benzene were found in 23 wells. Additionally, 18 of those wells detected levels of benzene at or above the federal safe drinking water standard
The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) decided Thursday not to expand their current flush-only advisory area.
State environmental and health officials had considered increasing the flush-only advisory area because a home outside the advisory area was contaminated with gasoline.
The current flush-only advisory area extends from the Prairie Meadows Estates subdivision along Wildflower Lane north of Mill Road to the subdivisions along Mockingbird and Hummingbird Drives south of Western Ave. The western boundary is the block of Maple Road between Mill Road and Western Ave. The area extends a few hundred yards east of the pipeline break in the 1800 block of Western Ave.
The area affects about 40 homes.
An estimated 55,000 gallons of gasoline leaked from a pipeline owned by the West Shore Pipe Line company on July 17, and that prompted the DNR to issue drinking water and flush-only advisories for parts of the Washington County town affected by the spill.
The DNR said the drinking water advisory and flush-only advisory area has not changed since July, 31.
