Hovde leads GOP Senate primary race, according to new poll
MADISON- A new survey released by Public Policy Poling (PPP) shows a tight race in the Republican U.S. Senate primary race.
The poll had Madison businessman Eric Hovde leading the GOP field at 27 percent, former Governor Tommy Thompson at 25 percent, former Wisconsin Congressman Mark Neumann at 24 percent and Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald at 15 percent.
PPP, a Democratic firm, surveyed 557 likely Republican primary voters on August 8 and 9.
Hovde, Thompson and Neumann were within the poll's margin of error of plus or minus 4.2 percent.
The winner of next Tuesday's GOP Senate primary is expected to face Madison Democratic Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin in the race for Democrat Herb Kohl's U.S Senate seat, which he is vacating due to retirement.
A poll released by Marquette University's Law School on Wednesday had Thompson leading the pack by single digits.
