GERMANTOWN- A major animal cruelty investigation is underway in Washington County.
Authorities discovered hundreds of dead chickens at a Germantown home. 100 more were found alive, some suffering so badly, officials already know they won't make it.
"Most of the poultry were in cages, but there were some just walking around in the yard, those appear to be in fine health -- it's the ones that were in the cages that were in poor health and those were the ones that were recovered by the humane society," said Germantown Police Chief Peter Hoell.
The ones that didn't make it were put in evidence bags. Hundreds of carcasses were on the property, found in deplorable conditions.
"Based on the poor conditions on this site, it's without an doubt an animal cruelty situation...As far as the poultry feces, obviously it hasn't been cleaned in weeks, probably months. The smell is extremely bad," described Hoell.
Animal cruelty charges are among those on the table, however, the people living in the home haven't been arrested or charged yet.
