VILLAGE OF ELMWOOD PARK- The Village of Elmwood Park is at odds over a proposed Walmart coming to town, sparking an effort to get the president out of office
Maureen Bagg and her husband live right next to where Walmart wants to set up shop. But her problem isn't with Walmart.
The village would have to rezone the area from residential to commercial. There's a home on the land where Walmart would put the 42,000 square foot building.
Those homeowners are on board but their neighbors are not.
Several spoke up at a planning commission meeting Monday night.
"27 years we created what we consider our little piece of heaven which is about to be really grossly impacted on," said Maureen Bagg.
Even a few commissioners argued it's an affront to what the village stands for.
Some argue the the village president, Audrey Viau, isn't being transparent with the project, and want her out.
The same attorney representing the village is also representing the homeowner who wants to sell, and is in receivership for the vacant building that would be torn down.
"He's been with this project right from the start...I don't see any reasons why he shouldn't be," said Viau.
But there are plenty of people in the village who do.
"She point blank said to me, this is a good thing for the village," said Bagg. "She never asked me if it was a good thing for us."
The commission did decide to recommend the full board consider a public hearing on this property.
Because of this, there's an active recall effort against the village president.
109 signatures were submitted Friday, they need 66 to move forward.
