Gold deposits found in Marathon County Town of Easton
TOWN OF EASTON- According to recent tests by the Aquila Resources of Toronto, drillings confirm an extensive presence of gold deposits in the Marathon County town of Easton, reports WTAQ.
A previous estimate for the gold would be valued at over $200 million, but the firm also said that any actual mining is a number of years away, at the very least.
Town of Easton Supervisor Dean Beck told Newsradio 620 WTMJ's John Mercure this isn't the first time there were reports of gold in Easton; nor was it the first time people tried going to the Marathon County town to drill for it.
"I've heard rumblings of people going through rivers," said Beck. "I don't think I've ever heard anyone have any real luck."
According to Beck, "Only reason (people are) pursuing now is the price of gold is so high."
Beck said he was told the gold deposits aren't likely on the surface, but that hasn't stopped people from trying to mine the gold.
One person living in Easton has signed three agreements in past 25 years to give someone permission to mine on their property. Beck said each of those agreements fell through due to excessive cost of mining the gold or the person not wanting to follow through on all the mining permits.
WTAQ also reports gold was first discovered at the site in the 1970s, but the deposits have never been tapped.
