State Supreme Court to rule in factory farm case
MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Supreme Court is scheduled to rule Wednesday in a closely watched case in which a small town is trying to force a big livestock farm to meet tougher water quality standards than the state requires.
Similar cases involving so-called factory farms have been filed in six other Midwestern states, but Wisconsin's is believed to be the first to reach a state supreme court.
It was filed by Magnolia, a small town of fewer than 1,000 residents about 30 miles south of the state capital of Madison. Residents blame the town's water pollution problems on manure produced by Larson Acres' 2,900 cows.
The farm says the town doesn't have the authority to require monthly water quality tests on its land or take other steps to limit pollution.
