Franklin cautions about dry conditions, excited for fireworks show
FRANKLIN- Fourth of July fireworks is not just an event -- but a tradition in the Milwaukee suburb.
Setting up fireworks on an extremely hot day is dangerous.
"We may cut things out because it may reach too far and if it's out of the reach of the fire department, we don't want that to happen," said Travis Prill of Spielbauer Fireworks.
The grass is so parched, it's like kindling -- worrying some that Franklin would follow other communities that have called off the Independence Day fireworks show.
"I have been coming to this parade and these fireworks since 1987, so it's kind of like a ritual to me," said Franklin resident Greg Bruening.
"I was checking the Internet all week, trying to figure out if they were having the fireworks or not, because I heard the rumors that they were one of the first ones considering canceling them," said Renee Ryan of Franklin.
This sign outside the fire department reminds residents that the city's burn ban is still on. But it won't stop the fireworks.
"We don't want to risk public safety because of tradition, but I feel under the circumstances and how we've dealt with it up to this point, I'm fairly confident we'll be safe and put on a good show for the folks (Wednesday night)," said Fire Chief James Martins of the Franklin Fire Department.
