Saukville teen killed after crashing car down embankment
FREDONIA - A Saukville teen is dead after a weekend car crash.
Sara Pujanauski, 19, was headed south on County Road I in the Town of Fredonia when she veered off the road around 6 a.m. Saturday.
It happened near Belgium Kohler Road.
Pujanauski took out a pole and several trees before rolling down an embankment. She was the only person in the car.
Described as popular, Pujanauski graduated from Ozaukee High School in 2011 and had been attending beauty school in Milwaukee.
Friends were shocked by the news of her death.
“It just didn't’t seem real at first,” Zach Rudolph said. But reality sank in when he saw the shattered pieces of his friend’s car lying in the ditch.
He had been with Pujanauski just hours earlier at a friend’s high school graduation party in Random Lake.
“It hit hard. ‘Cause she was a good girl – outgoing and all that. She lived for the moment.”
Investigators are trying to figure out what caused Pujanauski to veer off the road. The tracks from her car don’t show any signs of her hitting the brakes.
The road is one she knew well. Her home is just minutes away and she was driving in that direction.
“Just a little bit more and she would have been home safe and we wouldn't’t be looking at this.”
Investigators say they're unsure whether Pujanauski was wearing her seat belt and whether drugs or alcohol played a role.
Her friends think she might have fallen asleep behind the wheel.
As news of Pujanauski’s death spread Saturday, friends stopped to see the scene for themselves, all trying to understand how the crash happened.
“It’s just hard to see someone like that die in such a tragic way. She has so many years left to go. Why now?” asked Rudolph.
