NEW BERLIN, Wis. - No pay cuts for longtime teachers, and the promise of a two-tier system based on merit are two of the reasons the New Berlin school board seems to be okay with the latest proposal.

Longtime teachers with advanced degrees earning $70-thousand of more had feared their pay would be cut as contract negotiations continued.

But under the latest plan, there would be two tiers to the New Berlin pay scale including a standard tier and a master educator tier.

Top paid teachers would not necessarily be those with higher degrees.

It would be based, more so, on how well students are performing in the classroom.

Teachers would also be paid more for coaching or serving on committees.

The deal still must be presented to teachers and administrators for their input, and finally be sent back to the school board for approval.
