Deadly dog disease spreading throughout southeast Wisconsin
MILWAUKEE- Parvo, a viral disease that causes canines vomiting and diarrhea, is spreading fast this year, according to Dr. Libby Gutting, who has seen two dozen cases at MADACC in just the last few weeks.
30 dogs in the Milwaukee area have died in the past few weeks from Parvo.
"It's something we usually see this time of year. It's really bad in the summer around here," Dr. Gutting said.
Due to the warm weather, the chances for dogs to be in contact with other dogs increases significantly and the disease is contagious. So contagious that if any strays are brought into MADACC infected with Parvo are put down.
The preventative shot for Parvo is only $15, when that is compared to the cost of a week in an animal hospital, it seems the obvious choice. Once a dog is infected, the dog is infected for life.
According to Dr. Gutting, "It is a virus, there is no cure for it, many animals can survive with care, but it takes a lot of supportive care to get them through it."
The easiest way to prevent Parvo is to make regular vet visits with your dog, and make sure their vaccinations are up to date.
