Milwaukee man sentenced for crash that killed grandmother
MILWAUKEE - A Milwaukee family got the closure they've been waiting for after Clementina Hernandez was killed while crossing the street. The driver that ran her down will spend six years in prison.
"I just want to say that this was a very tragic situation," the victim's daughter Matilde Lozada hernandez said.
Clementina, 65, was pushing a stroller with her grandson in it, crossing 6th St. Her 4-year-old grandson was injured.
Jesus DeJesus was driving on a suspended license and had cocaine and some medication in his system.
"Had he had abade the provision of the law of course this wouldn't have happened," prosecutor Kevin Shomin argued Friday.
The defense claimed this was a tragic mistake and that DeJesus had an abusive childhood but turned his life around; that despite crime in his past that he is a decent man.
"He called 911," DeJesus' attorney Michael Stienle said. "Now he's not the only person that called 911, but he picked up the call."
"I hope this serves as an example for people who are not able to drive because they are under the influence," Matilda said.
Hernandez' grandson has physically recovered but is in therapy trying to cope with his grandmother's loss.
