MILWAUKEE - The Marcia Coggs center reopened Monday morning after restoration crews worked for days cleaning up smoke damage. Thick black soot covered everything from ceiling tiles to the floors. The building was in the path of smoke from a fire across the street at 12th and Vliet Wednesday. Smoke from the fire was sucked in through air vents.
Dept. of Health and Human Services Director, Hector Colon, said everyone was sent home because of concerns about employees health. He said, "that's why we felt the need to make sure we shut down and make sure everything was safe before we reopened up." The two largest companies specializing in fire restoration were hired for the job. It's unclear how much it will cost, but officials say it will be covered by insurance.
Meanwhile, the investigation into what started the blaze continued Monday. The Milwaukee Fire Dept. says the Dept. of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is now in charge of the investigation. Officials aren't saying how long the case is expected to take.
