WATERFORD - Crews in Waterford said it would take until at least this weekend to solve the village's water problem.
Meanwhile, people who live there are under a ban on using water outside.
Village President Tom Roanhouse told Newsradio 620 WTMJ's Jodi Becker that the pump carrying water failed. He blamed high usage and wear and tear.
Roanhouse adds that the logistics of the repairs mean that the soonest the well pump would be fixed would be this weekend.
"We've got to get another one down there. We've got to test the capacity, and we also have to test the water for compliance with the DNR...for safe water," said Roanhouse.
In the meantime, people in Waterford went under the ban for outside water use.
"With the drought, [this is the worst time for this to happen], and it looks like that's not going to change for awhile either," Waterford resident Joe Imhof said to TODAY'S TMJ4's Tom Murray.
Imhof and his neighbors got red cards Saturday alerting them to a ban on all outside sprinkling and water use.
"Just saying that there's a malfunction with the municipal well and to not water our lawns until further notice," Imhof says.
Officials say 500 feet of piping needs to be pulled from the ground.
With the lack of rain, demand has been three times normal for water. But, it's thought the failure had nothing to do with the heavy usage.
