MILWAUKEE- It was a scorcher to mark the official start to summer.

Folks hit the grand opening of Milwaukee's beer garden and River Rhythms downtown, armed with whatever they needed to have a good time in the heat.

Water, icees, spray fans were some common themes outdoors as people braved the official start of summer Wednesday.

At the grand opening of Milwaukee's beer garden in Estabrook Park -- umbrellas and some German brew were the way to beat the heat.

"A public beer garden like this is a place where everyone can come together. You come here as strangers and you leave as friends," said Hans Weissgerber.

That was reason enough for Judy Dorner and Pat Muehl to sweat through a scorcher of a Wednesday.

"I love parks, I love Milwaukee and I love the advertisement of 'share a table and meet new friends,' so we sat down by Pat and John and said 'can we be your new friends?'" said Judy Dorner.

Across town, it was music setting the summer night mood at River Rhythms at Pere Marquette Park.  Beth Hermes packed quite a stash of cool treats on a day that hit the 90s.  But that wasn't too hot for little Kara to have fun with one of her favorite things.

"There's all kinds of hula hoops and I love hula hooping," said Kara Hermes.

And while the dog days of summer may be here a little sooner than some had hoped, what better way to make the best of it than with good food, and nice folks to share it with.
