MILWAUKEE - A 12-year-old girl from Milwaukee was recovering from injuries Tuesday morning after someone shot at a north side house.
Just after midnight Tuesday the girl's family said someone fired two shots at the duplex near the corner of North 39th and West Cherry Street.
Glen Hines thinks back to moment he realized a bullet hit his daughter, 12-year-old Averiona Hines.
"It went through the right arm and left big holes and lodged into her left arm," said Glen Hines.
That bullet pierced Averiona as she sat at the kitchen table inside her Washington Park home.
"She's 12 and she didn't deserve that she has to wonder why it happened to her… at home somewhere she should feel safe," said Averiona's mother Natisha Shelton.
The first bullet came into Alicia Hayes's downstairs unit. "I jumped out of the tub because I had kids in here my son got the kids and we ran to the back and we heard another boom sound."
That was the sound of a second gunshot.
"When I came in the house she said 'daddy I think I got shot," said Glen Hines.
She was rushed her to hospital where she's doing well. Her parents acknowledge their neighborhood isn't the safest but never imagined their child would get injured in her own home.
Meanwhile, an arrow marked where a bullet when through a wall at Alex Lemons' home. "I was just sitting on the porch, and I just heard a big bang. I rushed all the kids down stairs," said Alex Lemon, the girl's neighbor, to TODAY'S TMJ4's Nick Montes.
Police said the bullet went into a wall, and fragments struck the girl.
She had x-rays to determine whether the fragments came from the bullet or the wall.
The area is not a stranger to crime. Late last Monday, a 24-year-old man was seriously hurt after he was shot in the eye in the same neighborhood.
