6 kayakers rescued after boats capsized on Lake Michigan
MILWAUKEE- It was a dangerous day at the beach Monday because of the wind. Six kayakers had to be rescued from Lake Michigan.
Sean Held wasn't expecting the Coast Guard and police and fire boats to show up so fast -- but he sure was glad they did.
TODAY'S TMJ4's Charles Benson: "At some point where you worried about your safety?"
Sam Held: "Oh yeah most definitely right when I fell in."
Held and his friends were inside the harbor when three of the kayaks capsized. Held was in the 60 degree water for about 30 minutes.
"The shock of the water really frightened me but I just calmed myself down," said Held. "I knew there were others ones around that would help me out."
Wind was an issue all day at the beach. But TODAY'S TMJ4 found lots of people just hanging out or grilling out.
Jordan Golembiewski works at Bradford Beach and felt like he was in a sandstorm. "It's been terrible all day!"
But it was still a bit cooler near the lake -- just too cool for the six kayakers who decided after being rescued to pack it up.
"It got a little cooler, a little windier which made the water a lot more difficult to kayak in," said Held.
The Milwaukee Fire Department told TODAY'S TMJ4 the kayakers were fortunate it turned out okay for them. Too often they see people underestimate conditions on the lake.
