Woman lies about dog bite in Shorewood to protect dog

SHOREWOOD- A woman changes her tune about being bitten by a stray dog in Shorewood.
It turns out, just about everything the woman claimed was false. She was bitten, but not by a stray and not in Shorewood. It has people in the community relieved, and sad she felt she had to lie.
"You don't hear that stuff around here," said Shorewood resident Joel Pachefsky.
People in Shorewood were shocked to hear a woman was bitten by a stray dog in their neighborhood. And they had good reason. It didn't happen.
A 31-year-old woman claimed she was bitten by a black and white dog Thursday as she bent down to check its collar. It had people like Beth Zopfi-Selig a little frightened.
"I was concerned about other people in the neighborhood, if the dog is running lose," said Zopfi-Selig.
The victim changed her tune Friday, admitting that wasn't the case. According to police, the woman is a professional dog walker. She was walking the dog in Milwaukee near Locust and Shepard when it got startled and bit her. She lied because she didn't want the dog to be put down.
"That makes me feel really bad for her," said Zopfi-Selig.
TODAY'S TMJ4 went to the woman's house to see if she wanted to comment. Nobody came to the door, but a large dog did make its presence known.
She hasn't been charged, so TODAY'S TMJ4 is not releasing her name. And even though she had a quiet community on edge, some say there's still room for forgiveness.
"People do strange things for desperate reasons because they're scared and that's probably what happened," said Zopfi-Selig.
The woman did suffer injuries to her face, nose, and lips. Police say because the dog was known to her, they will refer the case to the Milwaukee Health Department.
