Firefighter son who rescued father after hit/run crash: 'Your worst nightmare'
SUSSEX - A fireman from Sussex described Thursday how he responded to a hit-and-run crash where his 84-year-old father was the victim.
Frank D'Amico helped take care of his father Camillo, who remained in critical condition at Community Hospital in Menomonee Falls after the Wednesday crash.
"I just responded from home like I normally do to a call," said Frank.
In the 19 years that he has been a volunteer firefighter, coincidence never played such a role.
"I looked at who they were working on and I thought, 'Oh, my God! It's my dad!'"
Camillo was on his morning walk near the corner of Maple and Good Hope Road when a car struck him in a driveway early Wednesday.
The driver sped off.
Other firefighters had to pull Frank away from his father while they worked on Camillo.
"I was just so shook up...It's just your worst nightmare."
The situation could have been worse, as Camillo's wife usually shares a morning walk with him.
That day, she decided to work out at a local gym.
"I probably think they probably both would have got hit," said Frank.
With no real description of the car that struck Camillo, the family is asking for prayers, and that the driver does the right thing.
"I know that our Sheriff's out here are very good and especially that they know me. They'll find you," warned Frank.
Camillo has a number of surgeries to endure, but Frank says he should make a full recovery.
