Central Wisconsin bus driver fired for alleged drunkenness

KRONENWETTER- A school-bus driver in central Wisconsin has been fired for allegedly showing up to work under the influence of alcohol.

The man was removed from a First Student bus Monday at Evergreen Elementary School in Kronenwetter after a teacher reported smelling alcohol.

First Student spokeswoman Maureen Richmond says the driver was suspended for 24 hours and then fired Tuesday morning.

She says the driver's blood-alcohol level was below 0.02 percent, the legal limit for commercial drivers. However, she says a teacher smelled alcohol on him and reported him to the school principal.

D.C. Everest Superintendent Kristine Gilmore says student safety is the district's top priority, and staff members are expected to report anything suspicious.

A Wausau Daily Herald report  ays the driver's name hasn't been released.
